How to Block a Phone Call
Have you ever wondered how to block a phone call? Maybe you would like to block sales calls or those persistent telemarketers! Many phone companies are offering selective call acceptance, but those involve you making a list of your friends and family and then entering them into a 'allow list? and all other calls will be blocked. This is often impractical because what if you got a job offer and since the caller is new, you will not get the call or the job.
So I checked into it and found out that no phone companies offer individual call blocking. Or at least no phone companies that I could find. I decided to try to find a way and found that indeed there is a way to block any phone number and actually much more can also be done besides just blocking.
There is software out there now that uses your computer modem to monitor the phone line. When it gets an incoming call it will announce the name of the caller through your computer speakers or house speakers if you have your computers sound connected to your home stereo system. It is completely customizable for how to hanle each individual phone number that comes in.
I tried all the software that I could and the best one that I found is called Ascendis caller ID. It is an amazing program that is loaded with cool features such as the ability to play a sound file when your best friend calls, announce in a male or female voice, and much more.
To use this type of software you need a modem that supports caller ID. At the Ascendis website they recommend a certain brand of modem for this because many modems claim to support caller ID but in practice they do not work. So take my advice and see what modem brand they recommend and save yourself the hassle of having to return a modem to your local computer supply shop.
Setting this all up is not too difficult. Just unplug your computers power source and open the case. Touch the metal frame of the computer casing with one hand while inserting the modem into an open PCI slot. This should be done this way to prevent static electricity from jumping from your fingertips to you motherboard which can ruin the board!
After installing the modem, put the case back together and Boot the machine up and load the modem drivers from the provided CD.
Now you simply plug your incoming phone line into the modems input and plug some phone line into the modems output and plug that cord into your phone. That's it you are all set up to screen your phone calls the high tech way.
The only disadvantage to this is that your phones ringer will always ring once even if you are blocking that call. This is because the caller ID information comes in right after the second ring so the software cannot react until it gets this info. However, you can get around this by simply turning your phones ringer off and turning up your speakers that way the first thing you will hear is the voice speech announcer or whatever sound you have programmed in for that caller. It really is cool software and is free to try for thirty days. You can read more about it here: http://www.squidoo.com/how_to_block_a_phone_call
